Decorative Fuel Effect Fires

These are the most common type of fire - they are imitation coal fires, without the inconvenience of having to clean them out and bring in coal. There are even versions available that can be controlled by a remote control, in the same way that you turn a television on remotely. They can also be operated by a wall-mounted switch. These fires fit into a conventional fireplace. They are essentially a decorative appliance - as with solid fuel fires, their efficiency is low as most of the heat is lost up the chimney.

Inset Live Fuel Effect Fire

Like Decorative Fuel Effect fires, these are also designed to look like a solid fuel fire, but it includes a "flue box" which, in combination with the front fret and overall design, restricts the flow up the chimney. Many also incorporate a convector. These are significantly more efficient than Decorative Fuel Effect Fires but somewhat more complicated to install.

Conventional Gas Fires

These come in two basic designs, both of which are generally much more efficient than either Decorative Fuel Effect Fires or Inset Fuel Effect Fires, and give out significantly more heat. The first type resemble glass-fronted solid fuel fires and in addition to models that fit into a conventional fireplace, models are available that use balanced flues which do not require a chimney (though they must be fitted on an outside wall).
