Dual-Fuel Driving Starts with Autogas Conversion
A different way to drive: How to convert your car to autogas in Northern Ireland
Converted cars are dual-fuel, which means you can switch easily between autogas and petrol (and, for some vehicles, diesel). Learn more below.
What’s Involved?
All conversions should be carried out by a competent specialist, who will include safety features. A typical conversion includes:
- A separate LPG tank is installed neatly in the vehicle.
- Fuel injectors and control components to deliver LPG safely.
- A small dashboard indicator/control for fuel status updates.
- An external filling point fitted to the vehicle.

What to ask your chosen conversion centre
Once you’ve found a conversion centre in Northern Ireland, you’ll need to speak to them to make sure your car is suitable for autogas. Here is a list of common questions you should ask before you make a booking:
- Is my specific make/model suitable for conversion?
- Where will the tank be fitted, and will it affect boot space?
- What servicing/inspection is recommended after conversion?
- What filling connector will my vehicle use (and do I need an adaptor)?
In Northern Ireland, the standard filling connection is typically a bayonet type. The Republic of Ireland commonly uses an ACME-type connection. If your vehicle’s connector doesn’t match the station fitting, you may need an autogas adaptor bayonet solution. Speak to your conversion centre to learn more.
