Flogas, Ireland’s fastest growing energy provider, proudly unveils its multifaceted campaign, 'Energy Behind the Athletes', designed to amplify support for Team Ireland athletes while spotlighting the vital role of community support. This coincides with the launch of an engaging docuseries on March 14th, offering an intimate look into Team Ireland, the clubs and communities that inspire them, through the lives of renowned athletes Ciara Mageean and Jordan Conroy.
100 years of Team Ireland
The 1924 Olympics in Paris was the first time Ireland competed as an independent country with 10 athletes and 2 medal wins. Here are some more key Irish Olympics:
- 1928 - Cork’s Pat O’Callaghan wins a dramatic gold victory in hammer throw despite being new to the sport, later becoming Ireland’s only double gold winner in 1932
- 1956 - Ronnie Delaney became Ireland’s ultimate Olympic champion with his gold medal win in a talent packed 1500 metre event in Melbourne, one of a total of 5 Irish medals.
- 1992 - Michael Carruth ended a 36 year long Irish gold medal drought, along with Wayne McCullough’s silver medal for boxing in Barcelona.
- 2012 - The London Olympics were Ireland’s most successful to date with 6 medal wins including Katie Taylor’s gold for boxing.
- 2020/21 - a historic first gold in rowing for Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy and gold for Kellie Harrington in boxing.
