Combined Heat & Power Systems - CHP

Localised, efficient heat and power onsite for hotels, complexes and nursing homes

Electricity is produced at power stations across the country, but only about 40% of the energy used to make it is turned into usable electricity. Some of that is also lost as it travels through the grid before it reaches homes and businesses.

CHP (Combined Heat and Power) systems work differently. They use a gas-powered on-site engine to generate electricity and, at the same time, capture the heat that would otherwise be wasted. This heat is then used in the building, making the system much more efficient—up to about 90%. Because of this, CHP can significantly reduce the overall carbon emissions from both electricity and heating.

CHP installations vary in type, depending on the end user:

  • Very large installations that use steam and gas turbines generate electricity and heat on industrial sites with a constant, high energy demand for production processes. Modern systems can synchronise with the national grid and allow excess electrical capacity to be sold to it.
  • Medium installations use a gas-powered engine to generate electricity on sites such as hotels and leisure complexes. The excess heat is used when demand is sufficient, such as in swimming pools.
  • Small - As technology improves, smaller-scale units are becoming available on the market, known as micro-CHP. There are different forms of micro-CHP, such as small-scale gas engines, fuel cells and gas boilers with a Sterling engine, which generates up to 1kW of electricity when the boiler is firing.
